The rules of cricket allow games, particularly Test matches, to last for days at a time. The longest game of cricket of all time, as recognized by Guinness, took place in 1939. Held in Durban, the test match between England and South Africa began on March 3 and ended on March 14, following 43 hours and 16 minutes of play spread over the course of nine days, with three days of rest. Guinness also recognizes the game as the last “timeless Test” meeting between nations, meaning there were no time limitations in place.

South Africa scored 530 runs in the first inning and led by 214 runs after England bowled out 316. England was set a target of 696 following a 481 run second inning for the home team, and proceeded to bat for six days, though two saw no play. However, just 42 runs shy of the target, play was suspended for rain and the game ultimately abandoned, the Test ending in a draw, as the visiting team had to make its boat back to England.
